What have the women of Women’s League been up to?

The 2014 WL Spring Wrap Up!

Purses for A Purpose was a Wild Success

Women’s League hosted its most successful one day fundraiser in its 40 year history when we opened the doors at The Purses for a Purpose Event on March 27th.  All proceeds will go to the Mirochnick Religious School and the South Florida Chapter of Dress for Success.

The women of our congregation made the night a complete success with their generous donations of purses and costume jewelry. We thank you all for donating such special items.

We started the night with approximately 220 beautiful handbags for sale ranging from $10 to $75 and had nearly 20 purses lined up for a silent auction. 110 women came to shop, nosh and support this amazing event.

Thank you to the chairs, Bonnie Licker, Robin Schwartz, Summer Faerman and Leslie Viselman for all of their hard work. Thank you to Caroline Mizrachi and Iris Cohen for the wonderful food and all of the kitchen volunteers. Thank you as well to all of the women who helped prepare, set up and run the event.

Thank you also to our event sponsors, Linda Kaplan, Sara Klompus, Shelly Gross and Bonnie Licker. Thank you to Mario Pucci for the fashion show and to our very own WL models, Eda Viner, Shula Fliesher, Lizzy Lean and Helen Yentis.   Start collecting your bags for next year! We are going to have an encore.

Hamentashen Sales = $5,000 in Scholarship Money for BTC Students

Women’s League of B’nai Torah Congregation baked and sold out of 8,687 hamentashen a week before Purim and made a $5,000 contribution to the B’nai Torah scholarship fund for children going to Camp Ramah, USY events and studying abroad in Israel.

Under the direction of Women’s League chairs Andy Stark and Paula Berenzin, it took 400 pounds of dough, 76 pounds of apricot filling, 50 pounds of raspberry filling, 60 pounds of prune filling, 44 pounds of poppy seed filling, and 40 pounds of Bavarian chocolate cream filling to satisfy this congregation’s appetite for hamentashen.

The rest of the amazing baking, packing and selling crew included Riesha Morse, Abbie Statky-Frank, Libby Statky, Paula Silver, Jenny Alembik, Carmen Cunha, Kim Saslov, Jane Bronchik, Mimi Silverstein, Sherry Sukel, Becky Michel, Cherie Chosid, Art Stark, Shelly Gross, Janet Hartman, Marilyn Seidenfeld, Carol & Sofia Alcalay, Sheila Trossman and Yardina Barzilav.

An enormous debt of gratitude goes to Summer Faerman, Steve Ginsberg and Cantor Ben Tisser for helping us store the hamentashen, Dr. Marnee Shneider for the freezer donation and our wonderful custodial staff for helping us make room when there was none.

Women’s League of BTC contributes $3,000 to Jacobson Family Food Pantry

On Monday, March 24, several representatives from Women’s League of B’nai Torah Congregation visited the Jacobson Family Food Pantry to present a donation check for $3,000, a 50% increase over last year’s contribution. This money was raised during the weeks leading up to the Purim holiday.

In the past, Women’s League members sent mishloach manot baskets (Purim baskets) to other members of Women’s League as well as to B’nai Torah clergy and staff. For the past two years, Women’s League chose to do a great mitzvah, using the money that would have been spent on sending baskets to feed the hungry. Ninety three families participated in this wonderful tradition, and through their generosity, Women’s League was able to contribute $3,000 for the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at JFS.  Women’s League is hoping for a 100% increase next year as the word spreads of this worthy project.

Thank you to Julie Risisky and her volunteers for making the Purim Gram Project a continued success.

Judaica Shop Donates $5,000 to the BTC Scholarship Fund

Every year, the Women’s League Judaica Shop donates $5,000 to the B’nai Torah Congregation Scholarship Fund for BTC families that request financial scholarships for their children attending Camp Ramah, USY and other Jewish activities such as the March of the Living and Israel experiences. This contribution is made possible because of your purchases made in our shop each year. Before you shop elsewhere, please always consider the WL Judaica Shop when purchasing cards, gifts, ordering personalized kippot for all special occasions or buying a new Judaica item for yourself. New merchandise arrives weekly so please come in and browse.

Thank you to all of the Judaica volunteers for their dedication and commitment.
