Women’s League Rocks Purim!

What a spectacular Purim we’ve had!  If you were among the 100+ guests at Vashti’s Banquet, you came home with henna “tattoos”, glitter make-up, your own bottle of essential oils, muscles “toned” from belly-dancing and the satisfaction of an evening with friends, good food, wine and hamantaschen!

So many people helped to make this program a success:  Chair Yvette Drucker and her committee:  Penina Bredoff, Lisa Newman, Karen Rubin, Sandi Schwartz, Abbie Statsky-Frank, Corina Waldan, Laura Actor and Kim Saslov.    Culinary Chair Caroline Mizrachi and her many volunteers produced wonderful Middle Eastern treats.  Thanks to all our vendors and Atlas Party Rentals, the maintenance staff, ECC support and everyone who helped that night.

Hamantaschen!  5,000 of them!  That’s how many our women baked under the guidance of Chairs Sherry Sukel and Sheila Trossman!  Not only were they used for Vashti’s Banquet, but also for the College Connection, the Purim Carnival, members who pre-ordered them and those who purchased them during Purim.  Many volunteers—too numerous to name—helped in the kitchen from January on, baking, packing and freezing these treats.  Thanks to everyone who helped and to those who volunteered freezer space, including Steve Ginsburg from Mr.Food.  Proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward scholarships for our youth.

All 450 Women’s League members received a hand-decorated Mishloach Manot box (thanks to ECC and MRS students) with meaningful treats, an explanation of the mitzvoth of Purim and instructions to use the box as a tzedekah box for Family Promise.  The contents were carefully selected to be environmentally friendly (Equal Exchange Chocolate), build community (creating havdallah together) and encouraging tzedekah. This labor-intensive project, which starts in the fall, was chaired by Elisa Leavitt and Shula Fleischer with intensive support by Julie Risisky and Racheal Isan.  Each woman spent countless hours calling volunteers, entering data, filling and distributing boxes.  The recipients are always touched by this mitzvah.  This year we also hope to touch homeless families in our community because of this project.

Purim Baskets for Clergy and Staff.  Thanks to the congregation’s generosity and the creativity and hard work of Heni Galel,  18 beautiful baskets were distributed around the building.  Heni handles this whole project herself and it truly qualifies as hiddur mitzvah, beautifying a mitzvah.  We also thank Southern Wine for their donation of wine for these baskets.

This is just an example of what dedicated volunteers can accomplish for our congregation.  Please join our efforts.  We ALWAYS need more help with our many projects.  Contact Volunteer Coordinator Corina Waldman  medrolmom@aol.com  and let her know you’d like to help.  She’ll find a project that fits your time constraints and interests.  We need everyone to make this a kehillah kedoshah, holy community.
